Headline: City students protest but grant is axed
Body: Students in Notts marched against plans to scrap a grant which helps those from low income families as politicians prepared to vote on whether to abolish the scheme.
Students protested in Old Market Square yesterday afternoon before a debate last night in the House of Commons on whether to axe the education maintenance allowance.
But the Labour Party’s call for the Government to rethink its decision was defeated by 317 votes to 258 – leaving a government majority of 59.
Nottingham South Labour MP Lilian Greenwood had warned that losing the EMA would mean 4,000 16-to-18-year-olds would miss out on £10 to £30 a week in payments, some of which goes towards travel to and from school.
