This evening (1st of February) a group of 15 people went to the Victoria Centre’s “Student Shopping Night” featuring late opening and discounts in many stores. The main focus of the evening was Topshop’s tax evasion. Flyers were handed out to customers – at first bemused, then the majority showing interest and voicing their support for the group and campaign. The evening started at 6pm, and by 6.39pm we were all back outside regrouping, after either being asked to leave or forced by over zealous and obviously panicked security.
Boots was the next target, who “due to a protest [were] closing early” as voiced over their tannoy system and on signs posted on their doors. At this stage it was almost impossible to proceed anywhere inside the centre without being followed by a large security detail.
With all flyers distributed, it was then decided we had achieved everything we wanted to achieve: a subversion of the “Student Shopping Night” with flyering inside Topshop, and the closure of Boots.
